Blog 2: The Allegory of the Cave.

In history there has been a lot of times when people have being living under  an illusion and many of the times this illusion ends disappearing because someone  took their time to find out the truth. Throughout history there have been many situations in which people had been lied to by the government in order to get peoples vote on what the government believes in. We start living under an illusion once they talk us into whatever is it that they want and we don't even know they're lying to us because we believe that they won't lie to us because is the government and the government never lie.

An example that happened in history where people had been living under an illusion is "manifest destiny" this is an example of how the government would lie to us whenever they want  to get their way. Manifest destiny was a belief made up by the government in the 19th century in the United States making Americans believe that god wanted America to be expanded more to the west. People in America believed the government just because the majority of the people in the 19th century were Christians and they didn’t think more space would of hurt them either. Americans started living under the illusion of manifest destiny and they started expanding America towards the west. A lot of people where killed because of manifest destiny and manifest destiny caused the beginning of some wars.

This illusion “Manifest Destiny” was very sucessful because Americans started expanding towards the west (Pacific Ocean). This is how American started wars with the Native Americans and Mexicans. Yes! Manifest destiny played a huge role in the Mexican war because America wanted to take over the Mexican territory. It was like if they wanted America to be just one world because they were planning on conquering the whole world, the government wanted America to rule the world.  This was one illusion put on the people from America by the government.

I find it very disappointing how people used to believe that god will want them to do all of this stealing Native American homes and not only taking their homes (Territory) they were taking their lives too. It gets me sad that they even used god as a propaganda towards manifest destiny. This was a perfect example of people living under the an illusion, time passed and then they discovered manifest destiny was a lie and it was just an excuse and that they have being living under an illusion.

Blog 1: The Cave and I (REVISED)

In an excerpt from “The Republic” title Plato I read that there was a time when prisoner to spend their entire lives in a cave. In this cave they couldn’t see anything else but their own shadows and the shadows of the people crossing by a path inside the cave behind them. They only had an illusion of how was it like outside the cave but they didn’t know anything else.  If one of the prisoners was lucky enough to be taken out from the cave and see the real world outside the cave he would be amazed of what he saw with his own eyes. He would find the outside world so much better than what he imagined it to be like. This prisoner would then realize that he has been having the wrong illusion of how the outside world was like, and he would try to tell the other prisoners about it, but they’ll pretty much ignore this prisoner and keep on living with the illusion that they believe in.

“Plato” brought me to the conclusion of thinking that in life people a lot of times try to ignore the truth of something that’s going on in their lives, or the truth about something that they believe in and only go with what they believe in and nobody can change their point of view. They will only believe in what they believe and if somebody tries to change their mind they will ignore that person because to them that person is wrong. People that are like this reminded me of the prisoners who live in this dark cave believing in this illusion that they’re not sure about, without trying to think deeper if their illusion is true or false. If only people like this could listen to other people’s point of view and try to be understanding and take their advices that’s the only way they can stop living in that cave and come out to the lightened world.

Like I mentioned before “People some of the times try to ignore the truth of something that is going on in their lives.” They do this because to them is better to live under the illusion (wonderland) than knowing that they have been wrong most of their lives. I will have to include myself in this category because I sometimes prefer to ignore the truth of the situation and live under the allusion, just because I believe sometimes is better to just pretend you don’t know something for my own good or the good of others. One example that comes to my mind is when a bad rumor comes out about a celebrity and you thought that this celebrity was a good person and stuff, some people choose to ignore the rumor just because they cant stand the fact that they’re wrong and that they have been living under this illusion the whole time since they first started liking this celebrity. I don’t know why they would do that rather than accepting the truth and knowing that things sometimes are not what you expect they are.

I believe that is better to live facing the blinding truth and getting scorned and rejected by other people in society than to live in the cave ignorant of the truth but safe in the comfort of the illusion. First of all I believe this because it’s not good to live blinded and believing in something that is not true because you know deep inside that you’re wrong and you don’t want to be rejected by society. I want to live knowing the real truth and not living a lie because I want to face reality and not in a wonderland that is not even real.

In this cave they couldn’t see anything else but their own shadows and the shadows of the people crossing by a path inside the cave. They only had an idea of what was it like outside the cave but they didn’t know anything else for example, what were those shadows crossing by or how everything looked like outside the cave.  If one of the prisoners was lucky enough to be taken out from the cave and see the reality of the real world outside the cave he would be amazed of what he saw with his own eyes. They used to find it so much better than what they imagined it to be like. This prisoner would be so happy and amazed that he would try to go through the path inside the cave and try to shout to the other prisoners of how great everything looks out side that dark and lonely cave they have spent most of their lives in, but the others prisoners would only hear shouts and not understand what he was trying to explain to them.  They would pretty much ignore this prisoner and keep on living with the image that they believe in.

There's always a first time.

  Good morning readers.

My name is Jose Mejia I was born In the Dominican Republic and My birthday it's on Halloween (uuuyyy creepy, I know). I never in a million years thought that I would be writing in a blog and speacilly that my first post would be about me writing about myself but you know what they say... "There's always a first time". One of the things that I enjoy the most in life is music. Music always makes you feel better when you're going through hard days or great days, It's like free therapy for your mind. I dont have to say much about myself just that I am a very friendly guy and can get along very easily with people. I enjoy the simple things in life such as a warm hug and nature. Also I like things that inspire me such as a quote, Movie, a book, or a simple photography.
